The UPS Freight contract expires in July 2013.
What are the improvements you'd like to see in the next contract? Have your say and tell us what is important to you.
Like I said its a guess n I'm pretty sure not all 12600 feel the same.... THIS ISN'T OVERNITE ANYMORE WHERE WE ACKNOWLEDGE SOMEONE'S CLASSIFICATION N TURN OUR BACKS ON SOMEONE'S COMPANY TIME THAT IS UNFAIR WHERE U HAVE A ONE YEAR GUY WORKING N A 13 YEAR GUY NOT WORKING IT'S A JOKE
Are we saying a Steward should'nt get reprieve at all? I will be quite honest here, I do not see alot of people knocking the door down to the union hall asking to become one!!! And after seeing what a steward does, most run away. I do not think it's alot to ask for. I am not suggesting a person of 13 years to my 1 be laid off first, however, every shop must have a working steward. And I agree maybe it would be a hard thing to get members to agree, but it would be a waste not to suggest. I currently get my dues back to me quarterly, and I am thankfull, but it's minute in comparison to the job duties added .
I was a steward for the UAW for nine years and work for the place 16 yrs and it was super seniority for stewards.that way you get your best people in there fighting for you and they stay in for the most part a long time
This will be my last comment on this "single line seniority issue".
Everyone knew the rules when they moved from classifications or transferred. You went to the bottom of the list.
Asking to change the rules now is just a way for a select few to jump the seniority process that had been in place for decades.
You all made your choices based on these rules and now you want to change them so you can jump the seniority boards.
If you didn't want to be at the bottom of the list, why did you change classifications in the first place???? I passed on transfers and jobs because I made a choice based on the long established seniority rules. You made those choices also, now live with them.
This isn't about being fair or justice. It is about a select few trying to manipulate a long established process to benefit themselves.
'YOU' made the choices based on the rules. Now you want to change the rules because you regret your choice?
Where I came from that is called B.S.
P.Boegel you are a true Overnite man, times have changed!
What I have pointed out and suggested would not benefit myself in anyway, I am looking out for the Brothers that have done their time, You sir seem very much all about yourself!
Whatever. Ron W. You keep dividing the rank and file. I am looking for solutions that benefits everyone. Not just the select few.
The rank and file are all ready divided..How are you contributing or helping a fellow brother teamster who is layed-off or not working? Do you really care if Road drivers or losing their runs to contractors or are you really protecting yourself hoping it doesnt come down to one-line senority? If thats the case, then you are the "select few".
Everyone that is for multi senority boards keep refering to old Overnite rules, I was with Overnite many years before UPS purchased them and never saw anyone layed-off or setting at home for weeks or even months waiting for work, this all began with our wonderful contract and the combinations of many things in the contract that gives management the leverage to screw it's employees.(why should a 10 plus year man sit at home while a 12 month rookie works everyday?)
We need single list senority to balance the confusion.
I am sure you will have vast support from all those you hope to push down the list, for your own benefit.
This is the Overnite mentality that kept the union out since the begining and it stil exist today with UPS Freight.
"Keep the workers divided and they will never unite"
Single list seniority all across the board!
HIGH PRAISE Ron. I couldn't have said it better myself.
Not one of you can answer my question?
How do you sell it(single line seniority) to all you wish to bump down the list for your own gain?
I'll answer your question..Just tell the Junior man that when he gets his many many years he will have a choice into bumping someone else in a different job..Do your time and the rewards will come..We have City drivers at our terminal that will not better their paycheck by taking a Road job..Why, cause they dont have any road experience..We have a 25 year City driver that if he wanted to make more money for his retirement, cannot get a senority spot on the road cause the bottom road driver has 3 years company and classification senority, that city driver with 25 years would go to the bottom of the Road board. Can he drive a truck? can he hook a set? can he fill out logs? Yes he can, he does it in the city everyday. Fair??? Not Hardly!
Very well put Nitetrain.
That is your pitch???? You'll have to do better than that.
Because only a fool is going to give up a bird in the hand for two in the bush.
Your right, thats whats wrong with our company and Americans in general..Take all you can NOW, dont plan or save for your future..Senority is alot like saving for retirement, instead of putting away a little money now and then, you put away the years, and somebody who puts in their years should be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor..The way it is now, Junior man is greedy, he doesnt or wont give in to a senior man, one day he'll be senior and his boss will not let him move to a better position and he'll regret he didnt lighten up on those senior guys who tried to bump him years before.I remember when I first got hired on, I respected everyone under me, no matter what department they were in..In return they gave me respect back. Now I'm Number 1 road driver and have no plans to bump anyone..Trouble with KIDS today..they want everything NOW without trying to EARN it first..Your probably right, we wont be able to change anyones mind on this subject..so be it..it will just be another company with 3-5 year(Top) employees. Guys with senority will just get layed off or be placed on the bottom under a junior man and will eventually quit and go some where else and it will be a revolving door of disapointment, your time will come Junior man..
My point is it is never going to happen, when more will be effected adversely than positively.
P. Boegel, if it were up to a vote right now, you seem to be the only person on this forum that supports the double seniority list, the rest of us seem to understand that the single list is the only way to go.
Your hire date should be your seniority no matter what classification you choose. That should be an advantage to the job as well, giving people the opportunity to do something different.
THE EASIEST N MOST FAIR WAY TO PUT THIS TO REST IS TO HAVE EVERYONE VOTE ON THIS ISSUE!!!! HOW MANY MORE ANSWERS DO U NEED? Y WOULD WE NEED TO CONVINCE THOSE THAT WILL B BUMPED? THEY HAVENT CARED ALL THIS TIME!! VOTING IS THE SOLUTION.
IM QUITE SURE THE ONES AGAINST THIS WILL VOTE NO, AND THOSE IN FAVOR WILL VOTE YES..... I GUESSED EARLIER THAT MAYBE A 1000 WERE AFFECTED, I FIRMLY BELIEVE NOW THAT NUMBER IS A LOT HIGHER.... FROM THE LOOKS OF IT SO FAR IT'S LEANING TOWARDS COMPANY TIME....
Y IS IT THAT SOMEONE WHOSE PUT MORE TIME WITH THE COMPANY IS MAKING LESS $ BCUZ OF CLASSIFICATION?
CHOICES...... LAST I CHECKED I "CHOSE" TO APPLY FOR EMPLOYMENT "FIRST"!!!! WHAT MAKES UR CHOICE BETTER THAN MINE??? Y HAVEN'T U ANSWERED THAT???
Y HAS DOVE TAILING BEEN AN ACCEPTABLE FORM OF KEEPING UR SENIORITY? 5 YEAR TRANSFER DOVE TAILS WITH HIS TIME N BUMPS MY 13 YEARS BCUZ OF CLASSIFICATION THAT'S REDICULOUS!!!
IM AN OLD OVERNITER ALSO WITH OVER 50 SENIOR MEN OVER ME, MANY OF US DIDN'T SWITCH BCUZ OF THE CLASSIFICATION REPROCUTIONS N YES THOSE RULES HAVE BEEN IN PLACE FOR YEARS... BUT ISN'T THAT ONE OF THE REASONS Y WE WENT ON STRIKE IN 1999??? UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICES!!!! IT'S BEEN LONG OVER DUE TO CHANGE THIS UNFAIR LABOR PRACTICE. Y R JUNIOR EMPLOYEES PROTECTED MORE AND ACT LIKE IF THEYRE UNTOUCHABLE BCUZ OF CLASSIFICATION, LET'S MAKE IT FAIR ACROSS THE BOARD, EVENTUALLY THEY'LL GAIN COMPANY TIME ALSO.
LIKE I SAID B4 THE COMPANY DOESNT HAVE AN ISSUE IT'S SAVING $ IF THE JUNIOR EMPLOYEE IS NOT TOPPED OUT....
PERFECT EXAMPLE SPOTTER WITH 11 YEARS GOES INTO THE CITY A WEEK AFTER A NEW HIRE, SPOTTER SITS AT HOME AS A PERCENTER.... NEW HIRE WORKS EVERYDAY, NOW THAT'S "REAL BS" IT'S UNFAIR N UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!
I agree 100% Lets vote that will end all the battles.....
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
Your exactly right, that is the way it should be. your time should mean something.
It's just like anything else, single line seniority means the senior man works first. VIOLA, JUST THAT SIMPLE. I bet alot of senior road drivers would kill for that. Besides, this is not Overnite anymore, I too am an Overnite veteran, and I am happy it's gone! Overnite new nothing of rules, or had the ability to execute them fairly or in good faith. Good riddance. It's about time we worry about kicking Fedex's rump, as opposed to has been's.
Divided "You Fall/Fail"
One Company One List.
I'm sure the suck azz brown nosers will disagree but this is fact!
So now anyone who disagrees is a suck-ass?
Way to unite the members around your cause.
Your intentions are clear.
And you still have no answer on how to sell 'single line seniority' to all you wish to bump for your own gain?
I don't know if people are aware of this or not, but in the UPS parcel centers in my area they go by "CLASSIFICATION SENIORITY". This is not old 'overnite mentality' it is UPS mentality. Trying to demonize a company that doesn't exist with false info isn't going to bring anyone together.
WERE FAR FROM BEING IN THE LEAGUE WITH UPS.... N OUR PAY CLEARY SHOWS IT!!!
Single line seniority? seniority is basically all we have, the entire contract is based on seniority, are you advocating the contract we have is junk and shouldnt be built on? and I am sure you practice this everyday!!!! I find it rediculous for a 28 year veteran to be home waiting for the call when a man with three years experience is working. This 28 year veteran has worked these years and a little bit of a benifit for those hard working years should be apprecited and valued by someone, somehow, and seniority is the key. I am from a one line seniority barn and it works great. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants to see a layoff. but unfortunatly it is the name of the game. You put in your years, and the reward comes with patience. Elvis did not become famous in a year.!!!!!
where was your 28 yr guy when the bunk houses were up and running and days where spent away from family and friends for days at a time. where was this guy when they came up with extra boards and adhoc where we walked around with a cell phone in my pocket waiting to get called in the middle of the night just to get to go to work so my family could eat well I hammered thru it and now have a bid run after years of the of the other BS and you want the road drivers to agree to one board so we can go thru that again, Son you missed your calling you should be in comedy on stage cause your funny.just because you hid on the dock or in the city doesn't give you the right to bump people that have put there time in and have now got past it.if you wanted to drive the road why didn't you do it years ago and you would now be enjoying your hard work---not the hard work of others
This 28 year guy has done all those things you mentioned and more..I have stayed in bunk houses in Dallas, K.C., Little Rock..Drove a flat back mack twin screw with no air, radio or power steering..Missed all my sons sporting events and growing up years, till UPS bought Overnite and the contracting began, now I'm home all the time and my son is moved out..Those good ol road jobs starting getting canceled and cut..WTF!, I guess I could go to the city or maybe the dock and wait out arbrition! NOPE! go to the BOTTOM you 28 year dinosaur! your not taking my city run! I've worked hard for 3 years to build this run, your not worthy old man!!!Now thats FUNNY! it's also true! It could go either way..but if a 29 year city driver wanted to come to the road, I would more than welcome him, he drove the same sh*t I did. Might have gotten to see his family more and not sleep in dirty bunk houses, but that would be something I would not hold against him. Why would I? not his problem..
Very well put 28 year guy, with time comes choices!
Yes we all made choices. Based on a system we all worked under for years and years.
We have to live with our choices. Not ask someone else too.
monkeyboy its not about the choices made, its about years worked having a benefit to it. What is wrong with someone wanting to change positions in there job. I bet if the retirment went to one scale for all, you still wouldn't see any road drivers change classifications to make less and have to do more work. You wern't forced to run the road, most of us took the job that was offered to us at the time. SENIORITY SHOULD RULE How about the guys out freezing on the dock for 20 years don't they deserve a benefit if they want to change jobs. Whats fair is fair whether we like it or not. I'm all for transers to come with seniorty, if there is a opening somewhere why not......
and go to the bottom of the board like I did and just for threcord they told they wanted me to understand that I would never be a city driver ....was a city driver for 5 yrs at another company and no where your coming from, just saying if you want the road so bad do it right go for the next opening and go to the bottom of the list and do it like everybody else has
We should all have the same retirement too. Why should some have the advantage of making more retirement than others? We all put in the years, we shouldAll deserve the same.
UPS Parcel retirement is based on number of years . We work for the same company. Why should our retirement be any different?
I have a small issue with this. There is a referance to the pention in the contract, and the sole manager is UPS. I have no issue with the way it is now. I do have an issue with the fact that some recieve the SPD ( SUMMARY PLAN DESCRIPTION) and some do not. there was also a change in 2008. For those affected after 2008 HIRE . I think there should be a referance to recieving information to the stipulations of the plan or SPD, and how it affects those after 2008, and those prior to 2008. And the referance should still be part of the contract. We are suppose to recieve info from the plan every 3 years, this is in the pention publication of 2006, and I have yet to recieve anything in referance since. Too many variables, not enough info. Any thought's?
You guys voted on this contract too, you can change it just because you don't like it now!!!!!!!!!
But you can change it locally, just get 51% to vote on an contract change.
Single line seniority is a way for the road drivers, that have their work , subbed out( which is wrong) to have there cake and eat it too.
12 months on the city board is not a rookie fellas, you road drivers are bitching about one seniority list because you cant work, but a few months ago you were making a1/3 more money for the same job ( driving) , but you didn't want to come to the city then, it a shame people only see whats best for them.
City chief steward indianapolis Indiana.
Guys we need to find common ground on all points of our problems at our work locations, this in fighting is going to help ups get another crappy contract over on us.
DW chief steward city, Indy
THE MANY THAT DIDNT VOTE THEIR NON VOTE COUNTED AS A YES.... IM PRETTY SURE IF THIS WAS KNOWN EVERYONE THAT DIDNT WANT THE UNION WOULD HAVE VOTED NO!!! THIS CONTRACT HAS DO MANY HOLES IN IT IT'S A JOKE.... PERCENTERS, ONE WAY FREIGHT, 156 DAY WORK RULE FOR VACATION, ETC....
I haven't seen anyone mention road driver work, it's the classification issue that's a problem for people that have put in their time with the company.... Y should a road driver want to leave his position if he's making more money? Y is someone with more time making less?
IT WOULD B AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD SO LET EVERYONES VOICES B HEARD N VOTE!!!! ISN'T IT IN THE CLASSIFICATIONS FAVOR RIGHT NOW? Y WOULD U COMPLAIN, I WOULD LIKE TO C WHAT WOULD U THINK IF IT WENT BY UR COMPANY, U PUT UR TIME IN UR DAY WILL COME ALSO!!!
You comment "U PUT UR TIME IN UR DAY WILL COME ALSO!!!" Yet your against 1 line senority and from what you've posted, the Union...Your working for the wrong company..you would be far happier at FEDX..Most Road drivers would not leave their position for a lower paid city job..I have worked for this company 28 years and dont know of one!! Yet I do know a few who are sitting at home with 20+ years while contractors pull their loads, and a 2yr city driver is working 40hr/wk..The Road driver doesnt want to take the City mans run, but he has to feed his family too..Most of the time it's visa-versa, The senior city man wants to run the road and has to go to the bottom of the pack and work his way to the top, which in MANY cases takes YEARS to do..I had 15 years more than the TOP Road driver when I moved to the Road..I worked a whole 15 days in 6 months..He finally retired and I moved up..I had to PLAN ahead for that..I could of waited for him to retire, but I wanted to get the classification senority before the next guy who was taking my spot got in there. and I had 15 yrs on him too..You really have to do away with this mentality that " My"JOB" is more important than everyone elses, and if you have never done this "JOB", you start over..The "JOB" is serving the customer and driving the truck..And if you've been there for A LONG TIME, you should know it pretty well!!
WHEN HAVE I EVER PUT THAT IM AGAINST 1 LINE SENIORITY.... IM EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE!!!! IVE PUT IN 13 YEARS MYSELF N DON'T NEED TO GO ANYWHERE ELSE! I WENT FROM BEING A BOY TO A MAN.... I WAS TAUGHT THAT "OUR PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE" EVEN DOH AT TIMES IT WAS FRUSTRATING SEEING MEDIOCRITY.
WHEN I WAS ASKING QUESTIONS IT'S IN REFERENCE ON HOW UNFAIR THINGS R, WHERE WE HAVE JUNIOR MEMBERS WORKING N SENIOR MEN LIKE URSELF WAITING FOR THEIR LEFTOVERS..... WHAT MAKES THEIR CHOICE BETTER THAN OURS? WE'VE PUT IN OUR TIME FAR LONGER IN THE COMPANY!!!!
ANYHOW THE MEMBER WHO MADE THE STATEMENT ON "HARD WORK OF OTHERS" WHAT DO U THINK I WAS DOING PLAYING PATTY CAKE ON THE DOCK!!!! I FROZE N BUSTED MY BUTT OFF UP THERE N U WANT TO TURN AROUND N CLAIM THAT UR 3 YEARS THAT UVE PUT IN MEAN MORE.... GIVE ME A BREAK I HAD TO WAIT IN LINE TO EAT 4 TIMES LONGER THAN U DID!!!! DONT GIVE ME THIS NONSENSE THAT I HAVEN'T PAID MY DUES!!!! DON'T TALK THE TALK IF U HAVENT WALKED THE WALK!!!!
I must have confused you with the OTHER LOUD TYPER! LOL..Regardless where anyone stands on senority, it just comes down to fairness and respect..City drivers have enough stress as it is..I myself wouldnt "CHOOSE" a city job..And most city drivers I know wouldnt choose a road job..but if it came down to it and you were" LOOSING" your job (run)everyone would have to make a unpopular decision, not Choices..
We need a bare minimum platform.
1. Guarantees for 10%ers.
2. The same TAW language that is in the UPS national contract.
3. Layoff and recall language.
4. 12% of all seniority lists able to schedule off on all available days/weeks.
5. Blackout weeks only on the end the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters.
6. No contractors to be used at any time ahead of any full timer or casual.
If these items are not in the next contract we all need to vote no, until they are.
These are fair, just and obtainable. They benefit all and hurt no one. They especially benefit those who are the most vulnerable.
Let's get rid of the "non garuntee" status all together. After seeing what damage this has done to the 90%ers. it should be abolished.
I ,also,am for single list seniority all across the board. Retirement benefits should be based upon number of years service reguardless of job performed.
Vacation selection in article 25 is very contradicting, it states that single days require a MINIMUM of seven days advance notice and will be awarded by classification seniority.
In my terminal management interpret this to mean "A Maximum Of Seven Days In Advance", I feel this is unfair for the person that has something going on that requires advance reservations(Like getting married)then to be told "sorry you have been denied" seven days before my wedding or the driver that bought the camper that needs to make and pay in advance for reservations in the campground to be told "sorry you have been denied".
I feel after the weeks vacation selection is made by classification and seniority, single days be awarded on a first come first awarded basis and blackout days be only at the end of the busy quarters.
682 Local Cartage Steward
Ours say's the same thing about this...All though we've caught him using favortism when it comes down to certain nonmembers..Fridays are the biggest.."I need off day". Managment is hesitant to let people take off..Ours will if no more than 2 drivers already have it scheduled,But with 25 blackout days, and 20 employees (half of them with 4 weeks or more) there isnt any more days left on the calendar to take.
